Midnight Flower is a photographic series that explores the ambience of two cities at night, as a metaphor for the experience of inner-darkness, and inner-light. Developed through two self-initiated residencies, every aspect of the work was undertaken as a journey of encounter, embracing the uncertainty of not-knowing and intuition, by following sensations in the body. This process is mirrored in the practice of mindfulness, where moving away from personal narratives to directly experience feelings without judgement, can lead to shifts in perspective.
Artificial light, colour and space were unquestionably pursued as personal, intuitive motifs, using coated lenses and 35mm re-spooled cinema film. This allowed for the photographs to become their own mysterious world in-between Edwards’ internal feeling and the external cities.
Midnight Flower seeks to allow the viewer to discover, in their own bodies, what happens when inhabiting this suspended space between cooccurring opposites:
Presence and absence
Intimacy and distance
Tenderness and coldness
Somewhere and nowhere
When almost all reliable co-ordinates are removed, what is left? If there is a light in the darkness leading somewhere, where is it going? And is there a flower in the heart that blooms at midnight?
