In-between Heaven and Earth (2019, work in progress)
Using a wireless microphone set to reveal audio feedback that forms from the
interaction between performer, acoustic space, microphone and speakers, the air
in-between becomes rendered with sound, drawing all elements together as if in an
ocean: a change in one element affects a change in all of them. This totality is not
merely auditory, however, but is also fundamentally tactile, and begins not in the
ears, but throughout the entire body.
By choosing a stairwell and four channels across six floors, the experience of sound
becomes vertical and allows a potential audience to move freely between each floor,
constantly changing their relationship to the space, feedback and performer, as well
as the feedback itself changing with the bodies and their movement in the stairwell.
Everything, everyone, together without separation, in-between heaven and earth.
